For one of my subjects for my Bachelor of Creative Industries, KKB210: Computational Arts 1, we are required to setup a blog to use to store our work in a website portfolio. We are allowed to use any system that sends an RSS feed and is able to receive them, similar to the way the RSS widget in WordPress works. WordPress is the recommended system and there is of course space provided on the servers at uni for it. These WordPress based blogs are accessible from off campus, but I figure, since it’s meant to be a portfolio, I may as well set it up somewhere else so that I can continue to use it elsewhere. The other benefit of this is that it doesn’t take up space on my drive at uni which I’m always getting notices about telling me that my drive is full etc.

We are allowed to set it up elsewhere, or even use an old blog if we have one, as long as our KKB210 work can be easily distinguished from everything else. I decided to buy a new domain and host it myself, why not. I’m setting it up on www.matthewbrown.net.au, no reason not to. There isn’t anything of note there yet, just an under development page. WordPress has been installed, but I haven’t finished the template yet, so it is staying invisible for now.

So there you go. This subject so far is proving to be very interesting. I’m liking it a lot.

Atomic Live: Forum - The Future Of PC Gaming

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

With Microsoft’s Nick Hodge, Samsung’s Simon King, Asus’ Shawn Yen, and AMD’s Amy Prince, this free event is looking to be quite worth the 2 hours you would otherwise spend wishing you had gone!

With representatives from one of the leading software developers, the leader in computer displays, not to mention a great hard drive manufacturer, among RAM and various other components used in every computer, one of the top motherboard manufacturers, and AMD, it’s going to be an interesting event indeed. Just in case that isn’t enough, theres free gift bags and prizes!

If you need even more reason to go, well, I’ll be there. Isn’t that a great reason.

Maybe not.

However, it’s also at the best university in Australia, the Queensland University of Technology.

For all the details on when it is, where it is, and registration, have a look at the Atomic Live: Forum website!

Free Macbooks for Students

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

Who remembers my theories on how Apple are increasing their market share and becoming more and more of a threat to Microsoft and their massive market. Now a huge threat mind you, but it is still happening.

Well, the Oklahoma Christian University is now providing free Macbook’s to all their students, as well as an iPhone or iPod Touch. In addition to this, they are allowing students to exchange their Windows laptops for Macbook’s. Isn’t that awesome?

Just goes to show, changing an infrastructure completely to Mac’s is possible, and if one uni can do it, theres plenty of opportunity for others. It was only a week or so ago I was reading about another US university that was providing free iPhones to it’s new students.

Day 1, Semester 1, Year 2

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Ah the first day back at uni for the year.

It ended up being a great day. I just had two lectures today, KKB101: Creative Industries - People and Practices and ITB001: Problem Solving and Programming.

Yes, they are both first year subjects. ITB001 is regularly a second year subject in double degree’s, KKB101 I was supposed to do last year, but I actually did KIB103 by mistake, it’s actually a second year subject in my double degree, though a first year subject in Communication Design.

Anyway, in doing this it is first year subject, it’s actually kind of interesting. It’s the biggest class I’ve ever been in, with 1,500 students, that’s more than my entire high school at Lismore High. It’s split up over a couple of lecture theatres with video conferencing between them which is pretty cool.

At the end of the KKB101 lecture, I ran into a girl I did art with at school as well and haven’t seen in a year which is pretty cool, I’m pretty sure I saw another girl from my art class as well, I got snobbed though, so maybe not.

What else happened?

Well, today and tomorrow are/were market day’s at QUT, interestingly enough, there was no presence from Red Bull. Red Bull have had a presence with free stuff at pretty much every event at QUT in the past year.

There was however a stall from Coles advertising their Zu energy drink. They had to have given out hundreds of cans, they were the first stall setup, they were handing out free cans when I first got there this morning, while everyone else was still setting up, and they were still giving them out when I left in the afternoon. How awesome is that? I got two, one in each flavour. The Sublime is meant to be similar to V, with a lime flavour. The other, I don’t remember what it is called, and information about it on the net is extremely limited, but it is the purple can, is meant to be a mixed berry flavour and similar to Red Bull.

The Sublime is definitely a lot better than V. The other though is not as good as Red Bull, it is a quarter of the price though, and is still good.

So, free stuff is excellent. I think the worst part of the day was when the vending machine gave me Coke when I pressed the Solo button. Ah wells, lucky I like Coke anyway. Oh, I also got a blister on my ankle, but that’s my own fault for wearing short socks with new shoes.
